Tuning four-wave mixing through temperature in ethanol-filled photonic crystal fiber
2016
In this paper, continuous tuning of four-wave mixing bands in an ethanol-filled photonic crystal fiber is investigated. A wide tuning range of the parametric bands, from 745 nm to 920 nm (signal) and from 1260 nm to 1710 nm (idler), is achieved through the thermo-optic effect. This corresponds to a frequency tuning range higher than 2000 cm−1; such wide range can be particularly useful in applications that require broadband wavelength conversion, e.g., CARS microscopy. Numerical calculations are in good agreement with experimental measurements.
Spontaneous emission of an atom in a dynamical photonic crystal
2014
A structured environment such as a photonic crystal can strongly affect radiative properties of an atomic system, for example the spontaneous emission process. Recently there has been also an increasing interest on dynamical photonic crystal, that is photonic crystals whose dielectric properties change on time. We consider the spontaneous emission of an atom placed inside a photonic crystal with time-dependent properties (dynamical photonic crystal). We investigate the atomic spontaneous emission in two different regimes, weak and strong coupling, assuming a small, periodic and adiabatic perturbation of the crystal. In the weak coupling case, we analytically obtain the spontaneous emission …
On chip shapeable optical tweezers
2013
International audience; Particles manipulation with optical forces is known as optical tweezing. While tweezing in free space with laser beams was established in the 1980s, integrating the optical tweezers on a chip is a challenging task. Recent experiments with plasmonic nanoantennas, microring resonators, and photonic crystal nanocavities have demonstrated optical trapping. However, the optical field of a tweezer made of a single microscopic resonator cannot be shaped. So far, this prevents from optically driven micromanipulations. Here we propose an alternative approach where the shape of the optical trap can be tuned by the wavelength in coupled nanobeam cavities. Using these shapeable …
Second quantization and atomic spontaneous emission inside one-dimensional photonic crystals via a quasinormal-modes approach
2004
An extension of the second quantization scheme based on the quasinormal-modes theory to one-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) structures is discussed. Such structures, treated as double open optical cavities, are studied as part of a compound closed system including the electromagnetic radiative external bath. The electromagnetic field inside the photonic crystal is successfully represented by a new class of modes called quasinormal modes. Starting from this representation we introduce the Feynman's propagator to calculate the decay rate of a dipole inside a PBG structure, related to the density of modes, in the presence of the vacuum fluctuations outside the one-dimensional cavity.
Control of the chromatic dispersion of photonic crystal fibers for supercontinuum and photon pairs generation
2011
The interplay between chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects is crucial for an efficient exploitation of non linear propagation in photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Once a PCF preform has been prepared, changing the parameters that control the fabrication process it is possible to adjust the dispersion properties of the fiber. In addition, it is particularly useful to develop postprocessing techniques that enable a fine adjustment of the dispersion along a section of PCF. The tapering of PCF, using a fusion and pulling technique, has been established as a rather useful technique to engineer the dispersion properties along tens of centimeters. Some of our recent experiments demonstrate that…
Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers
2000
We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The transverse irradiance distributions for some of these high…
Asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation through a double grating.
2013
We report on experimental evidence of unidirectional transmission of terahertz waves through a pair of metallic gratings with different periods. The gratings are optimized for a broadband transmission in one direction, accompanied with a high extinction rate in the opposite direction. In contrast to previous studies, we show that the zero-order nonreciprocity cannot be achieved. Nonetheless, we confirm that the structure can be used successfully as an asymmetric filter.
Analysis of the Bloch mode spectra of surface polaritonic crystals in the weak and strong coupling regimes: grating-enhanced transmission at oblique …
2004
The Bloch mode spectrum of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a finite thickness metal film has been analyzed in the regimes of weak and strong coupling between SPP modes on the opposite film interfaces. The SPP mode dispersion and associated field distributions have been studied. The results have been applied to the description of the light transmission through thick and thin periodically structured metal films at oblique incidence. In contrast to normal incidence, all SPP Bloch modes on a grating structure participate in the resonant photon tunnelling leading to the transmission enhancement. However, at the angle of incidence corresponding to the crossing of different symmetry film SPP …

2012
The concept of 3D photonic crystals embedded in tandem solar cells as intermediate reflective layers is investigated. Numerical as well as experimental results will be presented.
The dynamics of a developing CW supercontinuum: Analytical predictions and experiments
2010
International audience; We show that the development of the supercontinuum spectrum in the quasi-CW regime can be interpreted analytically in terms of Akhmediev Breathers. Theory and experiment are in excellent agreement.
